Police say carnival weekend without a hitch

Raphael Martinez

The annual Carnival Road March saw thousands of Belizeans converge on the streets of Belize City.  Fortunately, this year it went without a hitch.  While the Belize Police Department will not disclose the number of officers who were working over the weekend, press officer Raphael Martinez says that the manpower increased by at least fifty percent since last year.  There was a shooting on Saturday in the area of Cinderella Plaza, but Martinez dispelled all rumors of grenades attacks.

Raphael Martinez, Police Press Officer

“I must mention that it went for most parts incident free. As you all know this is the time where we spend a lot of energy from the police department to police Belize City. It has always been approximately fifty percent of our man power used to come down to Belize City and that’s including of course members of the Belize Defense Force as well to come down to ensure that we have a very safe September Celebrations. This will actually continue up to the twenty-first of September and again we do encourage people out there if you see something, if you don’t feel too secured about something, please call the police department, 911, and let’s keep our entire September Celebrations to continue to be incident free.”

Can you clarify for us briefly if anything took place on Douglas Jones Street early on Saturday morning around six o’clock after the Carnival Jouvert had ended? We understand that shots were fired.”

Raphael Martinez

“There were no official reports of a shooting, but we indeed, as you rightly mentioned, we heard that shots were fired, but nobody was injured. So again it is very important that you make official reports and call the police when you see something like that.”

While the carnival season has closed in Belize City, in Orange Walk Town on Independence Day, the northern folks will be staging their own road march, which promises to be as exciting as the Belize City revelry.
