Police Constable Dayton Sacasa Acquitted of Extortion Charges

Dayton Sacasa

In the courtroom of the Chief Magistrate, a cop, who is originally from Dangriga, was freed today and will be entitled to half of his pay withheld on interdiction and he may very well be reinstated to the Belize Police Department. Two counts of extortion against Police constable Dayton Sacasa were dismissed this morning.  The trial for Sacasa began on Tuesday morning; he was accused of extorting fifty dollars each from twenty-five year old Ryan Davis, and nineteen year old Aaron Flowers of Belize City. The case which was prosecuted by Prosecutor, Danielle Hawke of the Belize Prosecution Branch, started on a rather shaky manner when Flowers, her first witness, refused to testify saying he did not want to continue pressing charges. Flowers said that the court cannot stop him from being kidnapped or killed by corrupt cops. With that said, Chief Magistrate Ann Marie Smith ordered him to leave her court. Prosecutor Hawke then asked for an adjournment to have her second witness summoned, but after three days of searching, Davis was a no show.  Back in December 2013, both men alleged that while detained at the Queen Street Police Station, they gave Sacasa fifty dollars each.
