P.U.P. Says PM Barrow Lied in the House…

Dean Barrow

P.U.P. Leader, Francis Fonseca was among the last Friday’s House meeting. He pointed out that the government was not helping P.U.P. town Councils. But the Prime Minister responded with serious allegations of financial impropriety against a councilor, the Deputy Mayor and the Punta Gorda Mayor, Anthony Fuentes. The PM claimed that Fuentes has been using public funds to service a personal loan with the Toledo Teachers Credit Union. For context here is what the Prime Minister had to say and Fonseca’s take on the allegations:

Prime Minister Dean Barrow

“That Punta Gorda Town Council administered by his great People’s United Party and particular stewarded by Mayor Anthony Fuentes gave instructions to the Toledo Teachers Credit Union Limited to make deductions from the council’s subvention monies forwarded by government to repay a loan of thirty-two thousand one eighty-seven forty-two that the P.U.P. Punta Gorda town council had secured from the Toledo Teachers Credit Union Limited. They said they needed this money to assist with providing the counterpart funding necessary under the Belize Municipal Project Development. The mayor, you see, instructed the Toledo Teachers Credit Union Limited to also take out from the town council monies deductions in order to repay the personal loan of the P.U.P. mayor of the Punta Gorda Town Council.”

Francis Fonseca, P.U.P. Leader

“Mister Barrow’s statement is a cowardly lie by a desperate mean spirited Prime Minister determined to win town council elections by any means necessary. Barrow’s statement was intended to impugn the character and the integrity of the mayor of Punta Gorda. Today, we are here to set the record straight and these are the facts. Unlike Dean Barrow whose law firm collects millions of dollars each year, Anthony Fuentes is a teacher by profession and a man of modest means. On April twentieth 2011, Anthony Fuentes obtained a loan from the Toledo Teachers Credit Union in the amount of some three thousand dollars….that was the original amount of the loan. This was a personal loan and he got that loan for the purposes of home improvement to his home in Punta Gorda. That loan has rolled over a number of times over the past few years and his outstanding balance on that loan now amounts to some fourteen thousand dollars. The Punta Gorda Town Council on June second 2014 obtained a loan from the Toledo Teachers Credit Union in the amount of thirty-two thousand dollars, one hundred and eighty-seven and eighty-two cents for the purpose of allowing the Punta Gorda Town Council to meet its two percent commitment to the Belize Municipal Development project being undertaken in that municipality.  The mayor’s monthly salary is four thousand dollars. His monthly loan payment is five hundred dollars to pay his loan at the Toledo Teachers Credit Union is five hundred dollars. This amount of five hundred dollars, ladies and gentlemen is deducted from that portion of the subvention which includes the mayor’s salary. Salary deduction arrangements, as most Belizeans would know, are an everyday occurrence between financial institutions and their barrowers. Apparently multimillionaire Dean Barrow is not familiar with this arrangement. When the mayor of Punta Gorda receives his salary from the town council, it is less this five hundred dollars which has been deducted and paid to the Toledo Teachers Credit Union. These are the facts ladies and gentlemen.”
