Flowers Says Balance Between the GSU and Public is Necessary

Insp. Mark Flowers

According to Flowers, a delicate balance needs to be struck between the GSU and the public in the manner in which it executes its function.  Hostility, he says, needs to be minimized.

Insp. Mark Flowers, Commander, Gang Suppression Unit

“In doing all that we do, certainly we need equilibrium with the way we deliver service and achieve success.  We need to have this balance with the public.  If we are professional in our approach and if we are having confrontations with people there will be less meaning to balancing the act.  So we now need conversations with people, we need to talk to people and not talk at people and this is where we are aiming.  It is, I have my own style of getting things done, I know most people in Belize City, whether in or out of the gangs, I think that I am capable of talking and having conversations with anybody and we have had several conversations in the street, I have had.  I’ve been on West Street yesterday and I walk wherever, I walk any part of this city knowing that I know the people out there and I want the unit to be less or offer less hostility in the way we come across because we don’t want to be a hostile group of people.  We are from this society and to this society we will one day return, whether we retire, we are fired, whether we resign, we go back to our societies.  What we want to while we are in this department and this unit is to offer the best services to the country that we possibly can.”

We will have more on our one on one with GSU boss Mark Flowers in Friday’s newscast.
