Police Say Citywide Crackdown on Crime a Resounding Success

While the insults thrown between Flowers and Musa make for sensational news and politically stimulating drama, there’re actually bigger things happening in the city. For example, there’s an ongoing operation which has seen the Police clamp down on crime in a big way. It’s an initiative which is targeting everything from gang violence and drugs to no bells and lights on bicycles. It was launched a few weeks ago as violent crime took a stranglehold on the city, and by all reports it is a resounding success. Today the Eastern Division’s Deputy Commander Senior Superintendent Edward Broaster gave News Five an update which we have to say is impressive where statistics are concerned.

Sr. Supt. Edward Broaster, Deputy Commander, Eastern Division

Sr. Supt. Edward Broaster

“The operation we launched, Not In My City, has yielded tremendous success so far. We have managed to seize over twenty guns off the street, seven for which we made arrests…the other thirteen were called in by members of the community, for which we applaud them…this is the way we want the community to assist us in making the city safe for everyone. We’ve dealt with close to nine hundred bicycle offences, over one hundred and eighty-two traffic offences, we’ve also made two hundred drug arrests and as well we have managed to deal with forty-nine found property drug incidents. As it pertains to public drinking we’ve made a significant amount of arrests as well, as well as loitering.”

“You’ve mentioned a lot of different aspects of the operation in the past weeks. Could you speak to the gang operations, specifically targeting violent crime within the gang hotspots in Belize City?”

Sr. Supt. Edward Broaster

“The gun seizures speak specifically to the gang hotspots. We’ve been meeting and greeting the community as well and we’ve been working on our intelligence gathering mechanism to try and locate where these guys have their firearms stashed and so forth and the twenty guns that we have seized thus far speaks well to that. We will continue to press on our officers to continue this type of operation. As a matter of fact the officer commanding Eastern Division is tight bent on us continuing to do the interdiction effort, to do the community meet and greet and talk to the community to find out from them how best we can serve them and protect them.”

Both mobile patrols and foot patrols have been ramped up in the city, with major offences launched continuously in targeted hotspots.

The foot soldiers of Ali say it is true.

No more crime next year, all good.
