BML Debt Still Outstanding, Is Mayor Bradley’s Promise Broken?

Mayor of Belize City Darrell Bradley has reneged on his very first commitment to Belize Maintenance Limited. The Council is in arrears twenty-one weeks, and he made a firm promise to pay off five weeks arrears last week Friday. Well, that promised payment did not materialize. That breach of faith right off the bat has caused some unrest and concern among BML workers. See, they’ve all been promised jobs at the City Council in January 2015 when BML’s contract is discontinued. Today BML owner Lawrence Ellis told us that they haven’t been able to get any commitment from anybody about the hiring of the workers, and yes, it is a disturbing situation.

“No, there’s nothing in writing. The Prime Minister was asked that question at a meeting we had at the Biltmore and he said that he did his part by getting the Mayor to commit, he can’t force him to put it in writing, but the Mayor had assured him that he would be hiring the workers. It is of concern because we have had commitments that have not been met on several occasions, so it is a serious concern.”

“Do the workers share that concern? Have you had any communication with them as regards their possible employment in January 2015?”

Lawrence Ellis

“Well really yes they are concerned, and they are organizing themselves through the union. I was told they’re joining the Christian Workers’ Union because some of them are of the belief that they’re only going to be hired for the election and are going to be dismissed afterwards. I don’t know exactly if that’s going to be the case but they are concerned about that.”

We tried to get comment from Mayor Darrell Bradley, who we understand was scheduled to return to the country today. He didn’t answer our call or text.
