The Rationale Behind Police Department’s Media Blackout

Sr. Supt. Edward Broaster

Today, News Five was allowed unrestricted access to Deputy Commander of the Eastern Division, Senior Superintendent Edward Broaster. Our request for an interview was handled quickly and efficiently by the newly formed Public Relations Unit. We make that point because there has been some concern expressed in certain sections of the media following an email announcement last Friday. That email announced that all queries for information to senior officers of the Eastern Division would now have to be channelled through the Public Relations Unit. On Thursday PR Coordinator Douglas Hyde will be meeting with the media to make it official and field concerns, but today we asked Senior Superintendent Broaster for the rationale behind the new policy.

Sr. Supt. Edward Broaster, Deputy Commander, Eastern Division

“The rationale behind that is for us to provide the public with factual…and as much information as possible. Anytime the media wants to have interviews regarding any matter we are just referring the media through our public relations team which will arrange such interviews such as this one. There’s no media blackout as has been alleged in some circles or quarters. We will be transparent and open with the media. It’s just a streamlining of what is happening so that our press team makes the arrangement and have the adequate individuals provide the interviews to the media.”

“We in the media have been very successful in speaking to certain OCs across the country, getting interviews, getting interviews, not going through the press team. Do you see this as something which will be expanded?”

Sr. Supt. Edward Broaster

“I can’t speak for outside Eastern Division jurisdiction, but we’re not stopping the media from talking to any OC, any officer commanding the various precincts. We are simply saying that whatever interview you would like to have, you would call the press team and the press team would make the arrangements.”
