2 Perish In Deadly Car Collision Near Belmopan

Jose Manuel Castellanos

A minor and a woman perished on Friday night at about nine o’clock in a traffic accident on a dangerous stretch of the George Price Highway. The two victims are seventeen year old Belizean Jose Manuel Castellanos and twenty-two year old Honduran Maritza Cruz, who were trapped in a GEO Tracker which collided into a Mitsubishi pickup. They lost their lives instantly and a third person was seriously injured. The driver of the tracker, Lenin Mayavan, is a medical student from India; he was slightly injured and earlier today, he was arraigned for traffic offences as well as driving above the prescribed alcohol limit. News Five’s Isani Cayetano reports.

Twenty-two-year-old Jose Manuel Castellanos, a resident of Belmopan, is one of two passengers to have perished during a fatal road traffic accident on the George Price Highway on Friday night.  Castellanos and twenty-two-year-old Maritza Cruz Rodriguez were both riding along with Lenin Mayavan, an Indian medical student when the vehicle they were traveling in was broadsided by an incoming SUV.

Superintendent Howell Gillett, Officer Commanding Belmopan Police.

Supt. Howell Gillett, O.C., Belmopan Police

“On Friday last, sometime after eight p.m., there was a traffic accident between miles forty-six and forty-seven on the George Price Highway involving two vehicles.  One is a Mitsubishi pickup, which we suspect was traveling towards Belize City.  The other was a Geo Tracker, we believe, was traveling to Belmopan when the tracker, according to our investigation, swerved into the left lane or the incoming traffic and the pickup hit the tracker to the side which caused it to flip over.”

Trapped inside the vehicle were Mayavan and his two occupants.  While the driver escaped grave injuries, his passengers died on impact.  Driving the other vehicle was sixty-seven-year-old Orange Walk businessman Luis Romero Urbina.

“That person sustained injuries which he is seeking medical attention for at a private medical facility at this time.  The two persons who have been identified as the dead are Jose Castellanos of Belmopan City and one Maritza Cruz Rodriguez, a Honduran of the Cayo District.”

“In terms of the blood-alcohol samples that were taken, what are the indications?”

Supt. Howell Gillett

“We suspect that alcohol may have been the cause of the accident, but blood samples were taken from both drivers and we still await the results of those tests.”

Lenin Mayavan

This afternoon, Mayavan was arraigned in the Belmopan Magistrates Court on a slew of traffic-related charges.

Supt. Howell Gillett

“The driver, who has been charged is one Lenin Mayavan, an Indian medical student of the Belize District.  He has since been charged with Manslaughter by Negligence, Causing Death by Careless Conduct, Drove Motor Vehicle Without Due Care and Attention, Drove Motor Vehicle Without A Driver’s License and Drove Motor Vehicle with Alcohol Concentration above the prescribed limit, as well as Negligent Grievous Harm.”

“Road Traffic accidents as a result of drunk driving seem to be very prevalent among the major highways in this country. Is there any additional effort that has been taken by your department in regards to highway patrol, checkpoints to try to mitigate the risk and the number of road traffic accidents?”

Supt. Howell Gillett

“Yes, I am glad you asked that question. Yes we did carry those out. As a matter of fact, we had checkpoints but not in this locality at the time of this incident. We do it by statistics and out statistics were showing that it was on the Hummingbird Highway that we had the most for last year during this period. Hence the reason for our checkpoint to be on the Hummingbird Highway. Of course the loss of life is very tragic and we want to ensure the public that we will continue to do our best to try to stem these traffic accidents.”

Urbina, News Five understands, sustained abrasions on his forehead, hands, right side of his body, right knee and elbow. Police investigations continue. Reporting for News Five, I am Isani Cayetano.

  1. StandUp says:

Other media reported they were coming from M&S Bar & Strip Club on the highway, and Castellanos was 17 years old – underaged at a bar? Drunk? And the 22 year old a Honduran “waitress”? Was she a “waitress” at the Strip Club? There’s more criminal charges that need to be filed. As long as stuff like this goes unchecked, then it grows in society and starts to become more and more common. Two lives cut short, families devastated, sake ah stupidness…
