F.C. Belize match up with Benque United ends in draw

Story PictureGood evening I?m James Adderley and we?re rolling with this week?s version of Sports Monday. Week eleven in the B.P.F.L. tournament brought a few surprises and we must say the performance by Benque Viejo United against F.C. Belize at M.C.C. Grounds yesterday certainly fits in that particular category.

Indeed its roaring start for F.C. Belize when in the opening minute Tyrone Muschamp dances his way into the danger zone only to squander the first scoring chance of this ballgame.

Daniel Thomas then centres this beauty off the left side to Rudolph Flowers and at the twentieth minute, F.C. Belize takes a 1-zip lead.

On this press, Rudolph Flowers tries to return to favour, but Daniel Thomas fails to complete the equation.

For its part, Benque Viejo United today is not the team it was before, so Emmanuel Martinez fires this right foot with bad intentions but Elroy Rowley comes up big in goal for the city team.

If you don?t believe Benque is playing big today, check this corner kick from Rudy Cruz. The header from David Barrahona is rejected by Rowley, but Jefferson Da Silva sends the ball back into the danger zone for Emmanuel Martinez who provides the equaliser for his team from the west.

Immediately off the kick off, Joseph Avila gets this header for the lead, but fails from point-blank range.

For certain folks, the action has picked up now for both sides when Benque gets this spot-kick right on top the eighteenth and meet the educated right foot of Jefferson Da Silva and the west takes the 2-1 lead at the fortieth minute.

This brings out full force pressure from the city team. Jason Avila?s attempt at goal hits the near upright, bounces to Rudolph Flowers who hits the side netting.

Folks it?s the final minute of the half when this spot-kick is kept alive to Daniel Thomas and we?ve got a 2-1 ballgame going into the half.

After intermission, F.C. Belize gets to break the tie. Rudolph Flowers might have beaten the keeper, but his touch leaves a whole lot to be desired.

Folks, this sequence somehow reminds us of David and Goliath as Joseph Avila takes down David Barrahona for which he certainly gets ejected and deservedly so.

Somehow people this ballgame losses its quality in the second half, but Benque United feels good about holding F.C. Belize to a 2-2 draw on the road.

In other results, from around the league, Hankook Verdes crushed Placencia Pirates 3-1, while Wagiya?s undefeated run screeched to a wicked halt after absorbing a 1-zip blast at home from Kremandala.

Over in Group B, Belmopan United clubbed Cayo Avengers 4-1, New Site Erei corralled Calcutta Bulls by that same score, while San Pedro Seahawks and BOCA F.C. battled to a 1-1 draw.

Thus after week eleven, the standings look like this: In Group A, Wagiya despite that loss continues to lead with twenty-eight points, Hankook Verdes show twenty-four, F.C. Belize twenty-one, Kremandala nineteen, Placencia Pirates eleven, Benque Viejo United has crept up to four points, while the Cayo Avengers, after eleven ballgames, they have yet to pick up a point.

In Group B: New Site Erei leads with twenty-six points, Mango Creek and San Pedro Seahawks hold nineteen apiece, Belmopan United now has sixteen points, BOCA F.C. fifteen, the Calcutta Bulls, what a difference a month makes people, they are in the cellar of this Group B with fourteen points.

Turning to the basketball scene, the Burrell Boom Basketball Tournament staged its decisive game three in the championship series between Reneau Estate and Fresh Pond Friday night at big Burrell Boom.

Give the Estate the first two points of this ballgame as Gilbert Gillett forces up this shot in heavy traffic.

For fresh pond, the reply comes from Raymond ?Footie? Gongora, who moves well with his new found weight. It?s more ?Footie? Gongora as he grabs his own missed shot and makes the put back count. He would finish with nineteen points, fifteen rebounds.

Here?s another look at Ray, and believe me, he has always had this shot. At the other end, give Ainsworth Jex the assist; give Jeremy Soberanis the long deuce.

Tonight Dionne Brown is hot as he hits for the Estate. He would finish tied for the game with twenty-one points.

The touch pass from Brown then finds Peter McKeesey and he knows what to do with the pill.

Of course Fresh Pond has its own hit man, but they must learn to use numbers on their jerseys for ID purposes if nothing else.

At the other end, Jeremy Soberanis shows off his left hand finish ? he would finish with twenty-one points.

Maybe I should have mentioned that Soberanis is a natural lefty. Reneau Estate goes on to win the decisive game three seventy-three to fifty-nine to take the Boom title 2005 and we say our congratulations to Ainsworth Jex and partners.

In cycling news, here?s a reminder that the mighty mountain bike cross country classic being sponsored by Fm 200 is set for this Sunday, December fourth. It?s a biggie for the Base Boys and Barbershop riders. You won?t want to miss it, so stay tuned people.

Finally folks, an innovative idea has been formulated by Dara Cyber Home Theatre in an effort to raise funds for Wilhelm White Junior, a semi-pro footballer and national team player who lost a leg to a traffic accident. Dara will feature the Kulture Yabra and Belmopan clash from the last semi-pro season. This is the final match played by young White before tragedy struck. This ballgame will be on the big screen. It?s scheduled for seven p.m. at the M.C.C. Grounds on Saturday, December tenth. It?s worthy of your support and all footballers countrywide are urged to put in an appearance.

Hey folks, that?s our show for today. We invite you back same time, same place next week. Jah over all, I?m James Adderley.
