Belmopan Police Thank Residents for Assistance in Fugitive Apprehension…

Howell Gillett

On Monday’s newscast, News Five told you about Tyrone Davis, wanted for a frightening home invasion in Crooked Tree in July. He’d been on the run since then, but was captured in Belmopan where he was hiding out. Davis is the second fugitive to be captured in Belmopan. In May, Edwin Paula, charged with robbery and murder, was recaptured in Belmopan after he escaped from the prison van. Today Officer Commanding the Belmopan Formation Superintendent Howell Gillett told us about the recent capture of Davis, and the successful collaboration with the community which has made Belmopan unsafe for criminals on the run.

Supt. Howell Gillett, O.C., Belmopan Police Formation

“He was captured almost eleven p.m. on Friday last in Roaring Creek and he has been handed over to Ladyville police for them to deal with the charges that they have against him.”

“Sir, could you tell us a little bit about the collaboration because during your time there, I notice that you have been able to lay hands on a couple fugitives from justice. Could you tell us what has made that possible?”

Supt. Howell Gillett

“Well we are really fostering of you want to use the word building a really good relationship with the public. So the public and confidentiality is a really big thing now. The public believes that we can share information with us and we won’t call their names, nobody would know about it. Some people just come in saying that they heard this, or they heard that but they do not want to go to court, but here is the information. And we have a good relationship with Belmopan itself and the villages in the surrounding area and with the Belmopan jurisdiction. And we want that to continue getting stronger so we continue to work on that.”

The home of Pastor Maurice Westby and his wife Betty was targeted allegedly by two men on July thirtieth. Betty recognized Davis since he had worked at the house during the Easter Holidays.
