C.E.O. of National Security on B.D.F. Presence in the Streets

David Jones

Belize Defence Force soldiers are back on city streets, thanks to a surge in violent crime. They were taken off in May when things calmed down somewhat…and deployed to the border which is the primary priority area of the force. But it was the calm before the storm, and they’ve had to be called back in as support for the Police Department. It’s a necessary, but not necessarily an ideal situation…and it’s not going to be a permanent reprieve by any means.

Brig. Gen. David Jones, Commander, Belize Defence Force

“We have been asked to go back to the city to work because of the recent spike in crime. We’ve been trying to get off the street because of our operational commitment…however because of the issues in Belize City we’ve been asked to go back. We’re not back there in the strength that we’re used to…we’re only doing two of the three shifts that we used to do. That is supposed to conclude shortly. As soon as the spike is going down, or the Police are able to address the concerns without the use of the Belize Defence Force we’ll be moving back off the streets again.”

George Lovell

Ret’d Col. George Lovell, C.E.O., Ministry of National Security

“Under Five B…Paragraph Five B of the Defence Act the B.D.F. has responsibility to give aid to the civil power in time of need. Clearly there was a time of need…that the Police needed. I was the one who after twenty-three years have caused the government to take the BDF off the streets, and as you know in May they came completely off the streets. I intend to keep it that way. But you have to understand that in the Ministry of National Security we have a responsibility to our citizens to ensure that we have citizen security and that it’s maintained at a very high level. You will agree that the spike that we had clearly threatened that and clearly there was a need for us to try and bring back some sense of security within the streets, and thus the reason for the B.D.F. to be sent out there.”

Lovell says he has directed both the Commissioner of Police and the Commander of the B.D.F. to formulate a clear and concrete timeline for when B.D.F. will be taken off the streets.
