Communication Breakdown Led to Garbage Fiasco Says BML Owner

Lawrence Ellis

In all the deals being struck, BML is perpetually owed staggering sums of money by City Hall. When it comes to payment for sanitation companies, both BML and Belize Waste Control, the Mayor focuses on dry periods, peak periods and the alleged gorging at the public trough by these companies. It’s been extremely difficult to tie the Mayor down where payment is concerned. To that end, BML’s owner Lawrence Ellis has met with Darrell Bradley to discuss nineteen weeks in arrears, and payment going forward. According to Ellis, the mess this week has nothing to do with dry periods – it’s all about Bradley shutting down communications.

Lawrence Ellis, Owner, Belize Maintenance Limited

“In that meeting the Mayor did concede that he owed the money and one of the issues that we have is that I know that there’s a dry period every year. We go through this every year. We do not have a strike every year because we agreed with the Council that during the dry season we would carry it and in their peak season they would pay us back. But unfortunately by the end of this year March, we were still short ten weeks from last year and because I could not meet with the Mayor, and because he was always saying publicly that he did not know when he was going to pay us…and me communicating with him by letter informing him that if we are not paid we would be forced to send home workers – hence the reason why that happened. It had nothing to do with it being a dry season. We know there’s a dry season. But we need to know at least what the plans are for us to get paid…so he conceded that he broke off communications and that was partially his fault and so the meeting was very cordial. We moved forward and he accepted that by tomorrow sometime he would give us a formal letter with a firm payment plan as to the way forward.”

“Are you prepared at this time to take the mayor’s word that BML will be paid what is owed as well as what will accrue between now and January?”

Lawrence Ellis

“Well I have to, Mike. I mean we discussed as men and he said what he said and he said it in front of my attorney and I have to take him at his word that he is going to do it. I can’t because of what happened in the past…as a businessman the Mayor is the Mayor of Belize City and I have to respect his office and I have to respect him and if he says that he is going to do it then I have to respect that.”
