Taiwanese Government Donates Compactor Trucks to CitCo

Both Prime Minister Dean Barrow and Belize City Mayor Darrell Bradley have maintained that the City Council will take over the works currently done by BML when that contract expires in January 2015. Barrow has indicated that G.O.B. will be assisting the Council with equipment to assist in that endeavour. And so is the Taiwanese Government. In a short ceremony today Taiwanese Ambassador to Belize Benjamin Ho handed over the keys to three retrofitted garbage compactor trucks which will be used in the city. It’s a sizable donation from Taiwan, shipping and all.

Darrell Bradley, Belize City Mayor

Darrell Bradley

“It’s a figure exceeding two hundred thousand dollars. The shipment costs were quite considerable. Each of the compactor garbage trucks were retrofitted, tested, upgraded; they went through everything before they left Taiwan. Again this is a year in motion; it lets you think how long we have been thinking about appropriating these functions. We are expecting other donations of street sweepers. One of the things that the Prime Minister also indicated is that he is prepared to assist the municipality in increasing its equipment cost so that we would be able to do areas right now that even BML doesn’t do…like have street sweepers that sweep the streets. These compactor garbage trucks again will go immediately into use. They will increase our capacity to deal with the hotspots in some of the areas that the City Council currently deals with. But come January, they are going to go in much fuller use and they will substantially increase our ability to deliver services.”

According to Bradley, the compactor trucks will be put into use on a part time basis immediately, then into full time service in January when BML’s contract expires.

  1. John Mencias says:

Apart from the fact of Taiwan’s continuing program of assistance and altruism towards Belize (whatever the underlying motives), what stood out immediately to me was the respect shown for us by ensuring that the trucks carried the flags of both our countries. Contrast this with the donations to the Police Department made by the USA, where pickups are emblazoned with the USA flag only. What utter disrespect! This has a condescending and oppressive neo-imperialist feel about it. If I were the Police Department, I would not have accepted these pickup trucks in that way! Condoning such disrespect costs much more (in lost national dignity) than what we saved by not buying the pickup trucks ourselves.
