Belize Competes in U-23 Female Volleyball Championship in Honduras

Team Belize arrives in Tegucigalpa, Honduras today ready to compete in the U-twenty-three Central American Female Volleyball Championship. The event takes place from August seventh to August thirteenth 2014.  The female athletes have been training for months and although, they are a young team they are ready to bring home the medals. The team will be playing against six countries with its first game on Thursday against Nicaragua. Today, News Five spoke to President of the Belize Volleyball Association, Alan Sharp who told us about Team Belize’s preparations.

Alan Sharp, President, Belize Volleyball Association

“Every two years, they have the under-twenty-three Central American Championship where all seven countries compete in men’s and women’s. This is the women’s tournament; the men’s comes up later on in the month in Panama. So Belize of course being a Central American country participates in the tournament.”

“Is this a qualifier for another tournament that is happening?”

Alan Sharp

“Yes. Although it is called an under-twenty-three tournament, it is actually for the ages…you had to be born 1993 and after which means that it is actually an under-twenty-two tournament because the Continental Championships are later on this year and the World Championships are next year. So the top teams of this tournament qualify to the next round.”

“We are aware of the fact that this is not the first time the girls are out representing the Jewel. Can you tell us a little more about the preparation they had to put in?”

Alan Sharp

“Yes, we actually had a couple Cuban coaches in for a part of the summer. So we had them work with the girls beginning early July. They worked with the coaches; we had players that participated in the first division tournament and girls that participated in the past in the junior national team.”

The national team members include: Kori Diego, Maurissa Williams, Xiomara Quan, Khristal Jones, Nayala Tun, Nandi Sabal, Leyia Hernandez, Briany Staine, Shynelle Glenn, Kiara Clare and Captain Tichele Solis. Accompanying the team are head coach Jack Reyes, assistant Jasmine Anderson, and team manager, Sharon Tun. Belizean referee is Bruce Coleman.
