A Promising Belize City Teen Murdered at Lord Ridge Cemetery

Chryslin Gladden

The news spread early on Saturday morning that a young woman had been killed at the Lord Ridge Cemetery. She was soon identified as sixteen year old Chryslin Gladden who had left home Friday night to visit a friend. The vivacious and young graduate of Wesley College was brutally stabbed multiple times; the murder weapon, a ten inch blade, was found nearby. Police today were piecing together information on Gladden’s heinous murder and will provide details of their investigation on Tuesday. But as far as it is known police are questioning one from among their ranks since Gladden was reportedly receiving threats from the constable attached to precinct one of the Belize City Police department. Duane Moody has been following this story since Saturday and files the following report.

There was a gruesome discovery on Saturday morning at the Lord Ridge Cemetery. Amongst the graves at the entrance of the burial ground, the mutilated body of a minor in blue tanks and short jeans pant was found. Just after six o’clock residents gathered and police scenes of crime personnel arrived shortly after at the site. Murder victim number one for the month of August was a sixteen year old student from the Queen Square area. Chryslin Gladden was stabbed multiple times to the body by a ten-inch blade police say was found two hundred yards away. Family members soon arrived to identify their loved one. Even today, they remain in shock as they mourn the death of Chryslin.

“It still neva hit me that it was Chryslin, so when I got that message, I dropped everything that I was doing and I was running towards home when I was picked up by a neighbor and he confirmed that it was true. Still in denial when I reached the family yard, I ran upstairs; Chryslin, Chryslin…no Chryslin. The family members put me in the van and we went to the morgue. When we went there, yes confirmed Chryslin is dead.  She received multiple stab wounds. It is just rough that she was taken away from us in that manner knowing that Chryslin had no problem with nobody. Everybody who knows Chryslin knows her for her bubbly personality. Chryslin is always there to help, always there to help.”

The former graduate of Wesley High School left home around seven p.m. on Friday en route to a friend’s house near La Popular Bakery, but she never reached her destination. Instead, Chryslin was last seen with another female minor on Central American Boulevard by the surveillance cameras of Belizean Drug Store.

“Chryslin informs us of her whereabouts. Chryslin had a habit with me personally where she woulda text: Rak wi deh soh and soh; rak we ketch ina wah taxi, wi deh pan wi way.  Chryslin left out at seven stating that that she will be back by nine because the last thing her mom told her is that she wasn’t going anywhere that night because she had plans to go to Soca Madness the following night. She called and stated that she reached, but didn’t say where. So nine o’clock my auntie noticed that she didn’t return, she said she’ll give her another hour. Ten o’clock, she realized Chryslin was not home, did not call, did not text or get in contact with nobody; which was weird. She began calling from ten o’clock all the way through to five o’clock when she actually got up and started looking for her. My aunt was around looking for her when a family member, who was with my aunt, got a call stating that a young lady was found at a burying ground. From the time they heard the description of the extensions she had in and the clothes she was wearing. They knew it was her.”

According to Gladden’s cousin, Rakeisha Smith, she has conducted her own investigation and found out some rather disturbing facts. Smith says Chryslin was last seen with a former colleague, who had met up with her at UB orientation last week.

Voice of: Rakeisha Smith

“Sunday morning to be exact, I went and did my own investigation. I went to Eighty-Eight and I asked them to rewind the camera because the young lady that she was with stated that she put my cousin in a cab in front of Belizean Drug Store and that was the last time she saw Chryslin. But when I went to Belizean Drug Store to query if he had cameras, he is a family friend, he stated when I showed him the picture, he said he saw Chryslin the said night with the said young lady at the store and the young lady purchased a Heineken and he saw them walking. And the cameras revealed the same thing. Chryslin wasn’t placed in any taxi. The cameras showed that the both of them walked the boulevard.”

“This young lady was her friend?”

“Not that I know of. The entire four years and Wesley College, it was misunderstanding [between the two]. The young lady used to thief her textbook, tear the pages out of her textbook. Chryslin would have come home to complain to her mom about what was happening, but the way how we were raised, we don’t fight fire with fire.”

Precinct Two of the Belize City Police Department had initially scheduled a briefing with the media this afternoon to give an update on the murder, but had to postpone it because of new details surfacing in the investigation. Nevertheless, News Five confirmed today that a police constable attached to precinct one has been detained in connection with this latest homicide in the old capital.

Sr. Supt. Alden Dawson, OC, Precinct 1, Belize City Police
