P.U.P. proposed amendment to Firearms Act

Francis Fonseca

One issue that the People’s United Party is tackling is the draconian gun laws. The leader of the opposition says that the party has written and submitted an amendment to the Firearms Act to G.O.B., but has received no response. Francis Fonseca says that the Firearms Act in itself is not a bad thing, but that the Opposition is proposing that magistrates have discretion on who is to be charged and remanded. This would mean that while the police can charge an entire family, the magistrate can take the decision on who should be arraigned for the firearm offense.

Francis Fonseca, P.U.P. Leader

“I raised it myself and called on the government to amend the law and offered to provide the Ministry of National Security with our ideas on proper amendments to the law. We have followed through on that; we did that way back I think on March of this year, where the legal advisor, Senator Anthony Sylvestre, prepared those amendments and submitted them to the Minister of National Security and also to the Attorney Generals and absolutely nothing; no response at all from them. What we have said since then is that we, ourselves, will move those amendments by way of motion in the national assembly at the next meeting of the House of Representatives, but we have not had another meeting since that time. So that is our intention. The government refuses to act, we have provided them with the amendments and we understand that this is a very important issue. So we are going to move by way of motions, those amendments in the national assembly at its next sitting and we certainly hope that the government side will support those amendments. They are very basic amendments simply putting back in place discretion for the magistrates. Right now what has happened with the changes in the law, they have removed discretion from the magistrate so that the magistrate has to send all these people to jail. We want to put back discretion in the hands of the magistrate so that they are able to consider each individual on a case by case basis and determine whether or not that individual in fact should be held liable for possession of the firearm or the ammunition.”

They cant bring in hanging or they will lose the election.
90% of all Belizeans are thieves and murderers and so they will lose the election.
That is also why the UDP will win many more elections because they support the criminals.
