What’s Going On At San Pedro Clinic?

Giovanni Solorzano

Earlier, we reported on the murder of San Pedrano, Felix Alamilla. His death has brought to light a serious problem on the main tourism island of San Pedro. For years, residents have been clamoring for an adequate public medical facility which would include a morgue. According to Doctor Giovanni Solorzano, Alamilla could have been saved and today expressed his frustration with the system currently in place.

Dr. Giovanni Solorzano, San Carlos Medical Center

“Immediate medical care could have been given if the government clinic would have been opened and when he got there, they could have started with an IV line or they could have started him with drips and the appropriate tourniquet would have been applied, possibly he could have made it and there is a possibility of a yes. But as you know, we do not have twenty-four hour medical care on the island.”

“As a medical practitioner, is this something you think, an incident again that highlights the need for a twenty-four hour medical facility?”

Dr. Giovanni Solorzano

“Yes you see the problem is that the island has grown so much. I’ve been on the island for the last twenty-five years and the island has been growing in every aspect—we have more people and everything—and there is an urgent need for twenty-four hour medical service. It is unfortunate that as we speak in this moment, if you go to the Polyclinic—and please take my word for it—you will see that in this month, there is only one doctor at the Polyclinic. Doctor Zuniga, I spoke to him this morning and he was leaving to Belize City at midday because he had to attend an emergency meeting. So when Doctor Zuniga has to go out because of an important meeting to attend, the Polyclinic is left with one doctor and then one doctor is barely able to provide care in the daytime because it is packed up and then in the night time, the doctor is exhausted. This is nothing new; this has been going on for years. We’ve been crying in the wilderness for medical care on the island. The next thing is not only that…it breaks my heart to see last night we saw the report of the San Pedro Council and we see that they spend ninety-four thousand dollars in traveling. I mean, we need to do a small morgue on the island and I was very adamant with the police this morning and I told them, with due respect. I don’t care if my private practice is closed for the morning, please leave him in this bed because these people are picked up, they are taken to the police station, they are left in a room on the floor, they have to arrange for a boat to transport them to Belize City; it takes them forever to make all the arrangements and finally the body is transported. I mean, this is dehumanizing. It is so sad to see that your loved one is there on the floor, he is stabbed so many times, and we need to go through a process to authorize transportation to Belize City.”

I am an American who lived in San Pedro 2001-2006. My husband died in Oct 2003 because we could not find an open clinic or a doctor late on a Friday night on the island. His body did not get to KHMH morgue until Monday, and by then, autopsy was inconclusive due to decomposition from lack of refrigeration. Hard to believe that 11 years later, nothing has changed. Shame on you San Pedro!

  2. Uncle Benji says:

Quit the bellyaching. Ali BaBa-rrow will never use your clinic or medical services, so no one cares about the inadequacies of your island and its medical facilities.

The Barrows, Esquivels, Vasquezes Fabers and Laras fly to Miami for private one on one medical consultations. So who cares about San Pedro?

Here in Belize City? Well we have KHMM where left over body parts can be found in the trash and under patients beds. We are happy. We don’t complain.

24 hours service on medical service will not bring money to the UDP government …. they will have less money for campaign and also for the Town Council… Puerto Azul has more $ for Hon Heredia….

San Pedranos are complacent…… they need to seek the assistance of the Cane Farmers to teach them how to stand and ask for things… bet you! …. GOB, Heredia and Barrow will immediately sympathize with the People…. Politics is about People, Government is about People and Votes is about People… God Bless the San Pedranos and Belize.

Thou Dr. Solórzano is running for office and thou he could use this to gain political mileage, I know he is not doing so. I had a family member get sick, it was at night, we had to wait at the polyclinic till someone got the keys so we could get in. No Doctor was on call so Dr. Solórzano had to fight to bring back my uncle to life, in still a very critical state, he was transported via air by Tropic Air who is the only airline to provide those transport services at night, to a belize city hospital. We can get a beer 24/7 on the island, we can get marijuana, coke, u name it…but medical care…unless its 8-12, 1-5pm, Monday to Friday then you are out of luck. The need at least one center to provide 24 hours basic medical service is so badly needed. But I will sit down and wait, cause both the mayor and area rep will again make empty promises, but then ministers can afford to get out of the island quickly to get medical attention. I kinda got angry at Uncle Benji’s remarks at first, but he is right, Barrow and all ministers do not care about San Pedro…They care as far as collecting the millions we pay in taxes and then ….die San Pedranos dies…jeje..sad but true…

Benji, if you call yourself uncle to anything yow4u would stop focusing so much on thePM and his ministery and go out and assist your relatives in obtaining their needs. Tell them where you get your so adiquate medical care from. God helps those who help themselves. He do punish the abusers,so be careful how high you sling your mud.
