Guatemalan Caretaker Drowns In Tilapia Pond at Fresh Catch

A caretaker of Cotton Tree Village lost his life at the start of the weekend when he drowned inside a fishpond at Fresh Catch Farm in La Democracia on Friday evening.  Fifty-seven-year-old Thomas Garcia, a Guatemalan national, reportedly went swimming in one of several freshwater pools when he submerged and did not resurface.  According to an employee, an alarm was raised when another custodian who needed assistance with work on the farm set out in search of Garcia.  When he initially failed to locate Garcia, a call was placed to the manager.  Sometime shortly thereafter, Garcia’s nude body was retrieved from Pond Sixteen, his clothing found on the far side of the pool.  News Five spoke this morning with Rural Executive Officer, Assistant Superintendent Christopher Noble.

ASP Christopher Noble, Rural Executive Officer

“On Friday, we did get that information sometime after seven p.m. to say that a gentleman had been found in one of the ponds in the tilapia farm.  The body was located and we had people go up there to look into it.  The gentleman is an employee of the farm and we’re expecting the results of a post mortem later today.  We, at this stage, are very young into it, we did some work over the weekend into it and we hope that we could put closure to it by day’s end.”

“Have you established an identity for the individual?”

ASP Christopher Noble

“Yes we did.  The gentleman is an elderly gentleman.  He is not a born Belizean but [one] that migrated to Belize.  His family has been communicated with and the embassy relevant to his nationality has been communicated with.”

“Do you have his age sir?”

ASP Christopher Noble

“Like I said before, elderly.”

Reporter

“Sir, at this stage can you say if police have ruled out foul play at all?”

ASP Christopher Noble

“We never rule out foul play until after we are done completing what we are doing.”

A post mortem examination was conducted on the body of Thomas Garcia today.

  1. Uncle Benji says:

What sort of nasty stuff are we eating when we eat this distasteful Tilapia fresh water fish?

Swimming naked in the fishpond? What else takes place in the fishpond? Then unu sell the fish as healthy farm grown fish.

Where are the food and agriculture inspectors when we need them?
