Cervantes Family Seeks Justice for Belizeans

The heinous, cold blooded murders of Ramon Cervantes Sr. and Sonia Abac have shaken the community of Orange Walk, and are grim wake up calls that safety and security in the tight-knit municipality cannot be taken for granted. While the families of those murder victims struggle to return life to some semblance of normal, Cervantes says it is important that justice be served, not only for those killed, but for those left behind.

Ramon Cervantes Jr., Son of Deceased

“I hope so…for the sake of Belize…for the sake of Belizeans, for the security of everyone…you know, because it is something that is impacting a lot of people that are having second thoughts about their security who used to take, like my father…their security for granted. I guess it can be so. And if this case is resolved properly and accurately and completely then I think it will restore a huge degree of trust in the institutions that are supposed to protect us and are supposed to give us justice.”

“What can you say about the support that you have gotten from the Orange Walk community in the wake of your father’s death?”

Ramon Cervantes Jr.

“Oh it’s great. The support has been really overwhelming…indescribable. You know my family really appreciates it. No amount of words can describe the gratitude we have for the Orange Walk community and also Corozal, Belize, Cayo, Punta Gorda, Stann Creek, San Pedro…you know from all Belizeans the support has been overwhelming because as I mentioned this is something that affects the whole nation, and what becomes of this case will determine whether trust is restored…the trust of the public is restored in the institutions and whether we will get back to a sense of security and whether we will get back to an atmosphere of security in our homeland.”

Police have confirmed that the men on remand—twenty-two-year-old Noe Daniel Gonzalez, twenty-eight-year-old Mateo Pott and nineteen-year-old Angel Antonio Cardenas—for the kidnapping and murder of Cervantes Sr. led them to the body of Abac, but they have not been charged anyone for her murder at this time. The investigation is ongoing.
