Evangelist murdered near foot of Adventist Church

Oscar Lambey

There are thirteen more days to go in the month, but July has already turned out to be a bloody one. There have been nine murders so far and early this morning, another was added to the growing list of violent crimes.  The body of a preacher, Oscar Lambey, was found on the grounds of the Seventh Day Adventist Church on Wilson Street. He was stabbed on the chest and back sometime last night and there are signs that robbery led to his murder.  The church caretaker found Lambey’s body just before seven this morning. News Five’s Isani Cayetano reports.

The unresponsive body of twenty-eight-year-old Oscar Lambey was discovered this morning on Wilson Street with what appeared to be multiple stab wounds.  Lambey, described by his sibling as a devotee who dedicated his life to spreading the word of God, is the latest murder victim in Belize City.  It is unclear what transpired overnight.  What is known, however, is that sometime around six a.m. police responded to the aforesaid location where they found Lambey’s remains.

Gloria Lambey, Sister of Deceased

“I was notified this morning about a couple minutes to eight [o’clock].”

Isani Cayetano

“What are the police saying in so far as either a preliminary investigation or whatever information they have gathered on this homicide thus far?”

Gloria Lambey

“They haven’t gathered much information as yet so we’re still awaiting more information.”

Santiago Ciau

Leading the criminal investigation is Inspector Santiago Ciau, of Precinct Three Police.

Insp. Santiago Ciau, Criminal Investigation Branch

“This morning at 6:50 [a.m.], based on information that we received from the police control room, police from Precinct Three visited the Ephesus Seven Day Adventists Church and Primary School compound situated on Wilson Street, Belize City.  Upon arriving there police observed the motionless body of a fair-skinned, Creole, male person lying face up about ten feet behind the primary school.  This person was dressed in a red long sleeve shirt and a long, blue dress pants with a pair of dark socks.  The person had one apparent stab wound to the upper left side of the chest and three stab wounds to the upper left side of the back.  He was identified to be one Oscar John Lambey, twenty-eight-years-[old].”

A motive for the fatal stabbing is unknown at this time and Lambey’s sister, like the police, is perplexed as to why someone would attack him in such a violent manner.

“I’m really not sure why anybody would want to kill him.  Anybody who does know him now knows that he, I guess I have to say was now, but a man of God, you know and he’s normally around Belize City.  In fact, the entire Belize District, you know, preaching the word.  So, he was a good person, he was a really, really good person, in heart, character, in everything.”

According to the inspector, the body was happened upon by a caretaker on the grounds.

Insp. Santiago Ciau

“Initial investigation has so far revealed that the watchman for the compound of Seven Day Adventist Church and Primary School, Mr. Curtis Richards, at 6:35 a.m. he was doing his regular compound checks this morning when he came across the body of Oscar John Lambey.  He contacted some persons who then called the police to the scene. It appears to be a robbery but we are still inconclusive on that.  We are still working to get to the bottom of it to get a proper motive as to the murder.”

The last time Lambey was seen alive by his sister was a week ago, when he visited her residence.

Gloria Lambey

“I saw him on Friday night when he spent the night with me at my home.”

Isani Cayetano

“Did he share any specific conversation with you regarding any possible threat on his life or anything of this sort?”

Gloria Lambey

“No, he just spoke to me about different things.  We were talking about food, about his different adventures per se when he’s out preaching the word.  The last he said he was in an area where he was trying to part a fight, you know, and that’s about it.  He didn’t speak about anything or anybody having anything against him, just about us and where we were at and that’s it.”

A preliminary investigation thus far leads police to believe that whomever killed Lambey presumably robbed him in the process of doing so.

Insp. Santiago Ciau

“When he was found the pockets of his pants were out like if someone was searching him or something.”

Duane Moody

“Has anyone been detained in connection with this murder, any leads so far?”

Inspector Santiago Ciau

“At this point we have one person detained who we believe may assist us in our investigation.  We had had other information which we are working on right now.  We are getting information from TIPS and we are looking at that information to see how far we can get to get a lead into this investigation.”

I was deeply saddened and upset by the senseless and tragic death of Oscar Lambey. I taught him Social Studies in third and fourth forms while he was a student at Ladyville Technical High.He graduated back in 2005 from the aforementioned school. He was a quiet, humble and disciplined student. he was never rude or disrespectful to me in class or to any other teachers fro that matter. All the teachers loved him for that. This young man had a promising future but sadly it was cut short by some uneducated, misguided, hopeless, idiot that probably only wanted a few dollars to buy some crack or weed. It’s a dam shame when someone who preaches the word of God could be murdered, robbed and dumped in a churchyard. What the hell is Belize coming to? Oscar will be missed by family and friends and so i use this medium to offer my sincerest condolences from myself and the teachers and administration of Ladyville Technical High School. Rest in peace Oscar, your work here on earth is done. You will be apart of God’s kingdom at the appointed time because your honored, loved and served him. Vengeance is the Lord’s oscar. Trust me that scumbag will get what he deserves, and it won’t be anything nice.
