A major bust: cops retrieve military rifle from city streets

Police made a major bust at around three o’clock this afternoon that will provide some relief to residents in the city. Officers retrieved an Israeli-made military type assault rifle from bushes in an abandoned lot on Faber’s Road Extension, an area which we told you on Thursday night is quickly becoming a hot spot for gun and gang violence in the south side of Belize City. In the past two weeks, there have been three murders and a shooting in the area where the Galil was found. The Israeli weapon, up until 2008, was used by the Guatemalan military, and according to the police, there is no indication that it has been used in the commission of crimes in Belize nor is it known how it found its way into the country.

ASP Calbert Flowers, Deputy OC, Precinct 2, Belize City Police

“We know that as a result of the recent violence in Belize City, particularly in the south side, the Precinct two police officers have stepped up their operations and patrol. As a result of the operation, about three o’clock this afternoon, a search was conducted on an abandoned lot, an open lot, in the Faber’s Road area where this Galil, a five point six-two assault military type rifle was discovered hidden in bushes. We know that these weapons are produced in Israel, their origin is Israel and they were used a lot in the Guatemalan military up to 2008 when they were stopped used by the military in Guatemala. We believe that this weapon belonged to some of these gang members in the south Side of Belize City.”

“Sir does it concerns you the type of weapon that these gang members have at their disposal, the military grade?”

ASP Calbert Flowers

“Certainly it concerns us. We know prior, we have intel that these gangs are operating with these weapons. We know that they have these weapons out there and based on our intelligence, we continue to go at them to try to recover these weapons.”

“Sir do you believe that this weapon was used in a past crime?”

ASP Calbert Flowers

“There is nothing to indicate at this point that this weapon was used in any crime in Belize.”

And in respect of a robbery of a firearm from the security of a Bowen and Bowen truck on Thursday morning near Haulze Street in the Saint Martin de Porres area, within minutes, police detained one of two suspects and recovered a handgun with five live rounds. Also on Thursday, the police K-nine Unit searched an overgrown area on Belisle Alley near King Street where they found two firearms: a Magnum and a Taurus handgun with nine live rounds believed to be the property of criminals operating in the area.

Finally the police command is realizing what the K-9 Unit can do. Keep the paws on the ground and you will find more of these weapons.

The question that every citizen in Belize should be asking is where the hell all the guns on the streets are coming from? These young men roaming the streets robbing innocent law abiding people and blowing each others brains out are doing so with guns that cost hundreds if not thousands of dollars. Since they can’t even afford to buy toilet paper to clean their behinds, where the hell or from whom are they getting these sophisticated guns? This is what the police department should be investigating. Find and eliminate the source/s of the guns and nobody will have any gun to shoot in the street. It’s that simple.Stop worrying about bicycle lights and bells and find the source/s of the dam guns. Eliminate the guns and a drastic reduction of crime will follow.
