New Eastern Division Commanders Speak on Crime

Dezerie Phillips

Assistant Commissioner of Police Dezerie Phillips is the second woman to take the helm of the Eastern Division. Her new posting was announced last week, and she joined fellow officers who received promotions at Wednesday’s ceremony. It’s a difficult job, but nothing new to Phillips who has been second in command at the Eastern Division for the past eighteen months. She says her priorities will be boosting the morale of officers, rebuilding community trust and crime reduction. With the recent spike in violent crimes in the city, we’d say she has her job cut out for her, but she says things are not as bad as they seem…it’s just the media making it look that way.

ACP Dezerie Phillips, Officer Commanding Eastern Division

“A lot of that has to do with all the sensitization by the media, spilling things over. But realistically speaking, the truth of the matter is that things are not as bad as they may seem. You may or may not want to agree with me, but that is the reality. I have been involved in different meetings with the different gang groups over the past few months, and some of the things we have been doing have been working. We will continue to build on those things…like we said it’s nothing new, it’s just a matter of building on what we have been doing and doing more of what makes us successful, doing more of what works. With respect to the high visibility presence on the streets, that will definitely continue. We will definitely be employing intelligence led Police of course. We will be re-strategizing our efforts, but of course we remain focused.  I see myself as somebody who is an inspiration to other people whether it be female or male. I am a very open person. I have an open door policy. I have to say that I believe that I am very blessed, because I have an excellent team that works here with me, and this is not about me. This is about the team that is here, and we have developed a very strong management team over the past eighteen months, and I am certain that the support is there to see us through this and to be successful in what we do.”

Phillips is one of four new Assistant Commissioners of Police, led by Deputy Commissioner of Police Miguel Segura.
