Smith Family Remanded Last Week…DPP Drops Charges!

Last week Tuesday, the entire Smith family including a cousin, who is the mother of a baby, and two minors, ages sixteen and seventeen years, were all remanded to the Belize Central Prison on a charge of kept firearm and ammunition without a gun license. The Smiths had just returned to their house after the burial of Myron Smith, the seventeen year old son of Alrick Smith who was shot near the basketball court behind the Complex in the Lake Independence Area.  The detention of the group caused a stir because it highlighted flaws in the draconian gun laws.   When police raided the Smith house, a nine millimeter pistol and thirteen live rounds of ammunition were found.  The Smiths maintained they were innocent of the offenses because two young men, one holding a firearm, ran into their house during a chase by the police. The minor subsequently pleaded guilty in court, but it did not help the family who was remanded to prison. This afternoon Alrick Smith, his common-law wife, Sandra Casey, their children Leon Smith and Tamike Smith, along with their cousin Ishaida Brooks, and the two minors were escorted to court after the D.P.P. instructed that the charges were to be withdrawn against them; except for the minor who had initially taken the guilty plea.  At two this afternoon, Senior Magistrate Sharon Frazer told they group that they there were free of the charges. After his release, Alrick Smith said that the family will be filing a law suit for wrongful imprisonment. Neighbors and friends converged in the area of the court to celebrate the release of the Smiths.
