CZMAI CEO Says Rangers Discovered Survey Pegs…

Goff’s Caye is one of the most popular and accessible public beaches to Belizeans so when rangers detected the survey pegs in June, it immediately raised eyebrows.  So who is placing pegs at the caye? We have been trying to find out for days and today we asked the Coastal Zone Management Authority which is responsible for the management of the Goff’s Caye. But even the CZMAI is unaware of who is doing the survey because they have not authorized any.

“When my guys went out there during the week to do their regular work, they noted the survey action that had taken place there. I was, to say the least, somewhat alarmed about this activity because as you know, Belizeans are somewhat conscious of the fact that when such an activity takes place, it has certain repercussions in terms of the ownership of that area of land. And in that regard, I did in fact go up to the Ministry of Natural Resources to inquire as to whether any lease—which was my first concern—had in fact been issued by the ministry which would have resulted in that particular survey activity. And I was informed then, as far as the ministry was aware, no recent lease had been issued. We don’t know who did it, specifically when it was done really and why it was done. But again, as you do know, events unfolded and more people came aware of this activity to the extent that the government of Belize did release a press activity outlining the lease conditions as they understood it to be with respect to Goff’s Caye. And as you may recall, from that press release, the government made a statement on what lease was issued, in what year and so forth. And they indicated in fact that as far as far as they are aware, no current or recent lease has been issued to anyone and indeed in so far as we are aware.”
