59 year old man is senselessly murdered while playing dominoes

Julio Mendoza

There was one murder over the weekend and the victim lost his life senselessly. Fifty-nine year old Julio Mendoza was hanging out on Raccoon Street Extension, as he routinely did, when he met his untimely death while playing his favorite pastime game of dominoes. Two gunmen were in pursuit of two men in the area but when they did not get to their target, one of them simply opened fire on Mendoza. Both his wife and police agree that Mendoza was no trouble maker and Duane Moody spoke to both. Here’s that report.

The carnage in the Old Capital continued into the weekend. Fifty-nine-year-old Julio Mendoza would routinely be here on Raccoon Street socializing and playing dominoes under this elevated wooden house. But on Saturday, while enjoying his favorite pastime, he was shot once to the head by one of two gunmen; he died six hours later at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital.

Corlita Obispo Mendoza, Wife of Murder Victim

“My husband died on a random shooting. He has done nothing wrong. A person was chasing two other persons and because the persons disappeared, the gunmen turned back and shoot the first person he saw. So that’s what happened. He shoot him right on his head. He was lying on the ground and he shot him right on his head. I believe that he died entering the hospital because as he get in the hospital, they put him on life support. So I thought that he died already.”

“The information is that these guys were pursuing someone else. When they couldn’t catch up with those guys that they were pursuing, they turned the gun on the group that Mister Mendoza was in, underneath the house. Police investigation into this latest homicide continues. We continue to step up our effort in order to try to stop the violence in the area. A number of persons have been picked up and interviewed. We have recorded several statements in an effort to find this person who caused this injury to Mister Mendoza. We believe that Mister Mendoza was just randomly shot at. He is not known to be involved in any criminal activities or any gangs. He was just in the wrong place at the wrong time.”

His long time friend and former coworker, Mister Teddy, says that he was asleep when the shooting occurred. He was awoken by the commotion and when he got downstairs, found out that his friend was mortally wounded.
