B.D.F. soldiers back on city streets to curb crime

Calbert Flowers

While several persons have been detained for questioning in reference to the murders and shootings that occurred in the past week, there have been no charges levied against anyone. The majority of the carnage occurred within the jurisdiction of Precinct Two and included the murder of Myron Smith, Leon Burgess, Davee Copius, Dwayne Hilton as well as the shooting of PIV gang leader, Edwin Flowers. As of this past Friday, B.D.F. soldiers have been back on the streets to assist the police department to regain control over the rampant criminal activities. Today, Acting Officer Commanding, Assistant Superintendent Calbert Flowers, spoke of the efforts currently in place.

ASP Calbert Flowers, Acting O.C., Precinct 2, Belize City Police

“We have, we have stepped up our efforts, particularly over this weekend. Since Friday, we have the assistance of the B.D.F. soldiers—like you rightfully mentioned—and we are out there more aggressive.”

“By that do you mean arresting people for quality of life crimes?”

ASP Calbert Flowers

“That is also a part of our efforts. We are targeting people who are loitering, who are hanging out on the street side aimlessly and those are out drinking on the street, public drinking; as well as other misdemeanor offenses.”

“Double-riding, etc?”

ASP Calbert Flowers

“Yeah because we know now that these criminals…if they can’t get their target, they will shoot at anyone on the street.”

The B.D.F. soldiers will remain on City streets for the next two weeks, but there is the possibility that they will continue on patrol if the crime wave doesn’t let up.
