Occupy Belmopan takes Belize City condemning Foreign Minister

Occupy Belmopan, an initiative led by activist Patrick Menzies, began in the nation’s capital several weeks ago.  The peaceful protest at the foot of the Assembly Building, involving a group calling itself the Alliance of Leaders and Ministers of Belize, is against the revised gender policy.  Today, they took to the streets of Belize City and while their effort seemingly lacked public support they are remaining strong.  President of Belize Can Patriots, Patrick Menzies spoke with News Five earlier and petitioned to Belizeans to join the cause.  He also took the opportunity to condemn the position of Foreign Affairs Minister Wilfred Elrington at the O.A.S. recently where he reportedly lent his full support to related initiatives spearheaded by the organization.

“This is an extension of an awareness campaign that we‘re doing in Belmopan and by Wednesday we‘re having a special meeting at ten o‘clock in the morning.  That will be our thirtieth day in Belmopan and we’re doing it day and night.  We’re there since the seventeenth of June.  What we’re trying to do is continue to bring awareness to the constitution of Belize so people can understand that LGBT in Belize is a crime.  It is illegal and therefore, by essence, if you look at it, the gender policy, even the signing of it is completely illegal because you can’t sign a gender policy that is okaying and bringing in protection for LGBT knowing that that is a crime when it’s signed. So we are in a serious problem right now. Beside all that, we want to bring awareness to what the Minister of Foreign Affairs declared at the O.A.S. he said that we support all the principles of the O.A.S.  Well the principle of the O.A.S. that meeting was about decriminalization of homosexuality. How can you support decriminalization of homosexuality when it is a crime in our country? How can the minister give a statement that says that we support all their principles when one of those principles and the reason for that meeting was the decriminalization of LGBT? Completely wrong. Minister Elrington needs to retract or be charged with treason because he is actually going completely against our laws. And to be the Attorney General and make a statement like that…he opened his mouth and inserted his foot. And so Belizeans deserve an apology and retract the statement that he gave. That’s why we are out here.”

Wednesday will complete one month since Occupy Belmopan commenced.
