Dwayne Hilton Ambushed and Gunned Down In A Yard Near Fabers Road

Dwayne Hilton

The Faber’s Road Extension has been the scene of two vicious murders and a shooting in a span of twenty-four hours. Edwin ‘Drive’ Flowers, one of the leaders of the PIV gang, was shot but survived the hit on Tuesday night, and on Wednesday afternoon, a body was found floating in a sewer lagoon nearby. A few hours later on Wednesday night, a third person was ambushed and murdered while a fourth person who police identifies as Derrick Mahler was injured. Dwayne Hilton was socializing at Mahler’s yard when a gunman opened fired; as many as four shots found their mark on Hilton. Police cannot confirm if the three incidents are related but they are looking at all angles. News Five’s Isani Cayetano reports.

A criminal investigation into the murder of Dwayne Hilton near Fabers Road on Wednesday has thus far proven fruitless, despite all efforts by Belize City police to make an arrest and determine a motive.  Hilton is one of two men to have come under fire from a lone gunman who emerged on the scene shortly after six o’clock that evening.  The pair was inside a yard at the corners of Custard Apple and Baldwin streets when the shooting began.

Assistant Superintendent Calbert Flowers sheds light on police response.

“Sometime around 6:45 p.m., police visited an area in the Fabers Road Extension area, corner Baldwin and Custard Apple Street where in a yard they observed the apparent lifeless body of a dark skinned male person later identified as Duane Hilton.  Police observed multiple gunshot wounds on the body.”

According to Hilton’s relative, Kendra Robateau, she had just met her cousin moments earlier and warned him to go home promptly since the spate of shootings is ongoing.  Little did she know that she’d learn of the fatal incident shortly after on the evening news.

Kendra Robateau

“I di sihdown by my ma di wait fi di news come on and di news come and then we hyah bout wah unconfirmed shooting da Fabers Road.  Then I get di call from my cousin and seh dat he [Duane Hilton] get shot.  I understand that, according to my cousin, that she mi deh home eena ih house right pan Fabers Road when her lee son come and hail ahn and seh ma come hurry and she da wahn nurse and she seh when she reach da di house, da di next lane from her house, dat he deh deh with four bullets eena his chest.”

Hilton’s murder was the second violent attack in the area in less than twenty-four hours.  Whether or not the attempted murder of Edwin ‘Drive’ Flowers the night before is related to this incident is the subject of police investigation.

ASP Calbert Flowers

“At this time we are still in the process of investigation.  We have recorded several statements.  We have interviewed several persons; however, [there’s] no substantial lead at this time.”

Reporter

“Sir, people in the neighborhood speculate that there may be a relationship between the shooting on Tuesday night of Edwin ‘Drive’ Flowers and the murder on Wednesday night.  Do you all believe there is a connection.”

ASP Calbert Flowers

“We are exploring all angles and we are looking, we are certainly looking in that direction.  The shooting where Edwin Flowers got shot and where Hilton got shot is very in very close proximity to each other.  We are looking at that angle to see if indeed they are related.”

While it is a lead being followed by investigators, the family says that Hilton was not affiliated with any particular gang.  If anything, they are saying he may have been targeted based on the area where he grew up.

Kendra Robateau

“I noh know he fi associate ihself with any gang or anything like that but we grow up around Ebony Street and Sittee Street and Mopan Street and they associate that area with the Ghost Town area.  I grow up ‘round deh, I noh have no kinda association with gang so I could tell yoh that dehn have people ‘round da neighborhood weh noh associate with no gang.  I noh know he fi have no enemy or fi anybody wahn shoot he or anything like that.”

Isani Cayetano

“Could this have been the result of some ongoing rivalry between other gangs in Belize City and he was taken to be either one of them or he was too friendly with, well in this case, maybe the Ghost Town Gang?”

Kendra Robateau

“I think that weh happen is because ah dah shooting weh happen da Fabers Road last night I think that probably he just get branded as somebody within da neighborhood and that da so he end up di get shot because I noh know he fi have no problem with anybody when ih come to any shooting and so.”

Police confirm having detained someone for questioning, however, no arrest has been made in the latest homicide. Isani Cayetano Reporting for News 5.

The fact that young black men in the Jewel continue this genocide without letup, is truly disheartening. For the life of me, I am amazed by the apparent lack of action by those who should be taking the lead in the lives of these young men, turned Killers.
Where are the fathers, or are they dead too?
As a race,we survived slavery and the most atrocious treatment ever visited upon another human being, by white people. And now this. This self inflicted genocide leaves us with no one to blame but ourselves. It could be that it’s a different kind of slavery but in the end, it’s one black man pulling the trigger against another black man. That, is what bothers me!

  2. Eddie says:

So you are basically saying that it will not bother you if the trigger is pulled against a Hispanic or Chinese or Maya???? And they call Mestizoes racists…..

  3. CEO says:

Just too darn bad! Wish they all hurry and kill each other off so we can have some calm in the country; sad to say but true.

The GOB will never do anything about these issues.
