Requeña siblings arraigned for 2 sacks of weed

A pair of siblings, busted over the weekend in Hattieville with a little over seventy pounds of marijuana, is tonight on remand at the Belize Central Prison after being unable to meet bail, following their arraignment before Senior Magistrate Sharon Fraser earlier today.   Shortly after two p.m. on Friday, police, while conducting a checkpoint between miles fifteen and sixteen on the George Price Highway, observed a cream-colored Toyota Camry diverting back to the village upon nearing the location.  They then pursued the vehicle which was later found abandoned in front of a supermarket.  Acting suspiciously inside the establishment were brothers Giovanni and Ellis Requeña.  A search of one of the men turned up a set of keys which was handed over to the police.  Another search was conducted inside the vehicle in their presence where two sacks were found containing approximately thirty-two and a half kilograms of suspected cannabis inside the trunk.  Twenty-four-year-old Giovanni Requeña and twenty-six-year-old Ellis Requeña have since been charged with drug trafficking.  In court this morning, they were unrepresented and Inspector Hector Rodriguez objected to bail on the grounds that the prevalence of the crime, the significant quantity of drugs and the fact that the charge of drug trafficking are very serious offenses.  And while the court prosecutor had heavy objections to bail, the brothers on their own behalf asked the court to consider them bail on the following grounds.  According to Giovanni, he is a single father with a baby to provide for and Ellis said that he is a father of two children ages two and six.  Both men were offered bail in the sum of fifteen thousand dollars each, plus one surety of the same with conditions that they must not be arrested for any other offenses while out on bail.  At noon today, both brothers were unable to meet their house and lot bail and were taken into custody and at 4:30 this evening, they were transported to the Belize Central prison where they will remain until their next court date on August twenty-eight.
