CWU to hold elections for 3rd trustee of the Executive

Dion Pitter

It’s been seven and a half months since the executive of the Christian Workers Union has been reconstituted with Audrey Matura-Shepherd as its President. Former president, Antonio Gonzalez and his General Secretary James McFoy were booted from the organization over alleged mismanagement of the organization’s funds. In December of last year, despite being expelled from the National Trade Union Congress of Belize in late October, the CWU held elections to select its new executive. Vice-President was Basil Brannon, Organizer Stephany Gongora and Treasurer Amy Forte, along with two of the three elected trustees; Antonio Heredia and Brian Duncan. The third spot was undecided because Dion Pitter of the stevedores and Maureen Mahmud Reyes of Belmopan were tied to become trustee of the newly minted executive. Well that post will finally be filled following an election on Saturday and the CWU in a release today urges its members to come out and vote. Today, the media caught up with contender, Ras Pitter, who says that despite his concerns about the process, he should be elected because were it not for the stevedores, the CWU would not have been able to move forward.

Dion Pitter, Stevedore

“We had some issues and I mi take wa stand and I come to realize and say make we just deal with it. I will not discuss about our inner situation publicly because it is not about that anymore…it is about moving CWU forward.”

Reporter

“Are you still offering yourself as a trustee?”

Dion Pitter

“Yes.”

Reporter

“Who else is offering, are you facing a challenge?”

Dion Pitter

“Well dah just me and my opponent weh we mi tie the fourteenth of December. But the position is beautiful and my position is that only me and the trustee so we wah see how serious the stevedores about putting me there. Dah fi dehn testament now; dah noh wah crowd and they have to pay attention more to their business. So putting me there and encouraging the rest of members to putting me there, we wah run CWU the correct way.”

Reporter

“Are you seeing that you are getting the support or are you doing anything to get that support?”

Dion Pitter

“Well I got my people on the ground di spread the word.”

Reporter

“But you have your concerns about your opponent and the manner in which elections would be conducted.”

Dion Pitter

“Yes, well I wish me and my opponent mi deh yah di stand up di face the media because dah noh war, dah noh war between me and she. Dah just fi make we put fi we slate together and move forward.”

Reporter

“Now no one is entitled to anything, however, you have and I have stated this in support of this, that you were the person who pushed hardest for change—you and the stevedores—and so when the entire thing was reconstituted, it would seem that by all rights, you all should have a place at the table, the stevedores. So then, my question is: is that a pitch that you are making, well it was the stevedores who pushed out Pancho and McFoy, so then the stevedores should be at the table.”

Dion Pitter

“Yes, openly. If dah neva sake of the stevedores, CWU mi wah still deh weh part ih deh. Openly I wah put that and I wah neva back down from that position because we have other people ina other entities weh supposed to mi di guide this thing. So my position wah always be dah the stevedores make this deh weh part ih deh.”

Voting will be held between nine a.m. and twelve noon on Saturday at the CWU headquarters on Cemetery Road.
