Body of a Belize City youth retrieved from the Haulover Creek

Vehicular traffic along the BelChina Bridge on Youth for the Future Drive came to a brief standstill around nine-thirty this morning when Belize City police were called out to bank of the Haulover Creek.  Floating nearby was the lifeless body of an unidentified female.  With the assistance of residents in the area they were able to recover the corpse.  It is unclear what led to the teen’s demise but police do not suspect foul play.  News Five’s Isani Cayetano was at the scene and has the following story.

Shortly before ten o’clock this morning, Belize City police fished a lifeless body believed to be that of a female minor from the murky waters of the Haulover Creek.  Before a gaggle of onlookers standing watch from the banks of the river and several others atop the BelChina Bridge speculating whose corpse it was afloat beneath them, officers inside a nearby boat retrieved her.  Inside the vessel with them was Felix Petillo, a local fisherman.

“This morning, one ah my friend tell me how dehn sih di gyal earlier but I noh really know weh gaan on because when I cohn from home I just hyah dehn got wah dead body eena di river so I just ask di police if dehn want I give dehn wah assist.  So I gaan tek out di boat, haul it up pan di side.”

The perimeter adjacent to where the body was recovered, as well as the approach to the bascule bridge, from both sides of the river, was cordoned and eventually closed to vehicular traffic.  At the scene following the retrieval, the unidentified remains were transported by Scenes of Crime Technicians to the KHMH morgue.  Shortly before midday, a preliminary report issued by police confirmed that there were indeed no signs of physical injury on the body of Andrea Herbert.  Police also say that she was mentally challenged.

Also unclear is whether the body drifted downstream from elsewhere along the waterway. Reporting for News Five, I am Isani Cayetano.
