About the Show

oye2Great Belize Television pioneered another first with the launch of Open Your Eyes (OYE)—a breakfast show created specifically for television—in November of 2008. The show is co-hosted by Marleni Cuellar and William A. Neal and begins at 6:30 a.m. on weekday mornings. This live broadcast generally features a four-segment format. The first—a welcome— provides the latest weather report; a mini, less structured discussion by the hosts; and also a self-reflection dubbed the Eye Opener. The second usually features expert guest(s) for an in-depth examination of a topic drawn from politics, business, fashion, cuisine, entertainment or sports. The third is usually a continuation of the dialogue and could be an extension of the in-studio discussion with the guest(s) or a conversational-styled, taped feature exploring the said topic from another angle. And the fourth—the goodbye—allows the hosts to update breaking news, give their parting shots, wrap up the show, and offer contact information for viewer mail. The program because of its fresh look, unbiased coverage and positive outlook is unequaled therefore positioning it as Belize’s favorite morning show for Belizeans living at home and/or abroad as it is streamed live. Since the program’s premiere broadcast on November 17, 2008, Open Your Eyes’ hallmark has been its ability to focus on a burning issue for an extended period of time as exemplified by its week on the Belize-Guatemala Claim, the Fifth Summit of the Americas, and Crime and Violence among others. An equally popular feature of OYE is the outdoor concerts held in its studio lot showcasing the performing artistic talents of schools, and established and up-coming artists. OYE is also renowned for providing its audience with a window to Belize and the world by broadcasting from locations around the city, country, region and globe showing how Belizeans live at home and abroad and also how Belize is affected by happenings around the world. In its first year alone, OYE has transmitted live from Fort Street Tourism Village, the Queen Square Market, and The Vaults in Belize City; Orange Walk; Dangriga, Stann Creek; San Ignacio, Cayo; Cancun, Washington, DC and Los Angeles, California, USA; and Port of Spain, Trinidad. The producer of OYE is Edith Gahona, while Amalia Mai is the executive producer.
