Corporal Punishment?
February 17th, 2010 | By OYE
There is an amendment proposed by the Ministry of education that will include the removal of Corporal punishment from schools. There are mixed emotions about this decision in the public. http://edition.channel5belize.com/?p=28324 What is your opinion??? Tomorrow we sit down with representatives from the National Organization for the prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect and from the Belize Family Court to discuss their reasons for supporting this amendment. Be sure to tune in. Posted in: OYE
I see nothing wrong with discipline but teachers need to know how far to take it.. Some teachers themselves need some discipline..
If we want to turn Belize into a less violent society, we need to teach our children that physical violence is not the best way to solve a conflict. So, even though this may make things harder for teachers and parents alike (using our superior physical strength over a child is always an easy option) , it is something we should strife for. As with anything we do we as teachers and parents, we should always ask ourselves: ‘what am I teaching this child?’ All of our actions teach them something, even when we don’t intent them to. So let’s start teaching peaceful conflict resolution at home and at school. If we don’t, we should not be surprised at our violent society.
Oh, and one more thing…the government should commit to educating the teachers about peaceful conflict resolution. Most of them received corporal punishment themselves and will not know how else to discipline. The teachers need help with this!
A teacher broke her ruler in my brother’s hand and left splinters in his hand. Some teachers take out their personal frustration out of our children. They need to find other forms of punishment. I am glad they are getting rid of corporal punishment!
The issue of corporal punishment continues to be sticky. I was raised in schools where corporal punishment was administered and I did not turn out to be bad. The Bible speaks about sparing the rod and spoiling the child. be it known that corporal punishment refers to any form of punishment that may cause injury to someone. It may include putting a child to pick up garbage! Let’s be careful of what we want to adapt in Belize!
it is absolutely WRONG to hit a child because he/she does not understand a math problem or can’t read a sentence properly. i remember when i was going to primary school (not so long ago) our teacher would put us in a line and ask us to spell words. if we got it wrong, he would hit us in our palms twice with a wooden ruler.
not every child is smart. some children are gifted in other genres. it is unfair to expect the same educational level from every child. teachers need to dig really deep and think of other alternatives to teaching without being violent.
